Correspondents interviews Aishah Schwartz

Muslimah Writers Alliance Joins 'Women on the Bridge' Celebrating 100th International Women's Day

Egypt's 'Women4Democracy' Collective Initiative Calls for Million Women March from Tahrir Square to 6 October Bridge Tuesday, March 8

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - http://prlog.org/11357408

PRLog (MWA-NET) – Mar 07, 2011 – (EGYPT) - On Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day, Muslimah Writers Alliance (MWA) urges global citizens of conscience to join the "Women on the Bridge" campaign in support of a call for an end to violence against women in conflict zones, like Palestine, Libya, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Iraq, etc., in addition to calling for equal seats at negotiating tables in support of peace initiatives.

"Because of a lack of education and access to information, many women are unaware of their human rights. Those who are aware and actively opposing injustices, live in genuine fear for their lives," stated MWA Director, Aishah Schwartz.

Schwartz added, "These women need our support to gain the skills and confidence they need to play a full part in rebuilding their communities; so they can raise their voices, knowing they will be heard."

It is anticipated that on March 8 more than 200 bridge events worldwide will take place from the Millennium Bridge in London, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Grand Barriere Bridge joining Rwanda and Congo -- and from Cairo, Egypt's 6 October Bridge.

Also Joining this year's 'Women on the Bridge' campaign from Cairo, Egypt is the collective initiative known as "Women4Democracy", calling for a Million Women March from the now world-famous Tahrir Square to the 6 October Bridge.

Playing no small role in the recent and ongoing Egyptian Revolution, Egyptian womens rights advocates reiterated in a recent New York Times article that the challenge they face now is to make sure women maintain their involvement as the nation purges itself of the Mubarak regime, by seeking political gains and true equality.

The World Economic Forum recently published a report that ranked Egypt 125th out of 134 countries when judging the equality between men and women. Additionally it was reported that 42 percent of women cannot read or write and almost no women are political leaders. (In 2010, only 8 of the 454 seats in Parliament were held by women.)

Genital cutting of women is also still widely practiced in Egypt, especially in rural areas. Women in Egypt also suffer a level of sexual harassment that would not be tolerated in many countries. They are often verbally harassed on the streets of Cairo and sometimes groped in crowded spaces whether they are veiled or not.

Hurghada Maritime Tourism Revolution Participants Succeed in Bid to End Corruption

"As successors of the current revolution, we must take our place as soldiers of justice to rebuild our country and revive its status as a respected nation with a 10,000 year history," stated Maritime Law Advocate, Said Mamdouh.

HURGHADA, EGYPT (Feb. 13, 2011) Capitalizing on the unprecedented success of Egypt's 18-day pro-democracy revolution resulting in the resignation of the country's 30-year tyrannical President, over 500 water and sport tourism business owners, managers, captains and seamen gathered in front of the Hurghada, Red Sea Ministry of Transport's Maritime office (El Tafish El Bahry) in a peaceful protest bid to oust general manager Abdu Abd Kareem from office on the basis of allegations of deep-rooted corruption.

Safari and daily boat owners and managers have been plagued for years by the inability to conduct their businesses in a clear and orderly manner unless they were in a position to pay large sums of money 'under-the-table', resulting in significant financial loss or complete closure of their businesses.

First-responders to the protest scene were Hurghada police, who barricaded the roadway in front of El Tafish El Bahry, but demonstrators were insistent upon addressing their complaints in front of a representative of Egypt's governing military, Navy Col. Tariq Ismail.

Protesters, chanting "Go Out Abdu", "Our Pocket is Empty!" demanded that the head of the Ministry of Maritime Transport in Alexandria, Mustafa Mohammed Whaba, remove Abdu Abd Kareem from his position as General Manger of the Hurghada Ministry of Transport Maritime office.

After listening to the complaints and receiving a petition signed by protesters, Col. Tariq placed a call to Alexandria making a verbal report. A short time later he received confirmation that the protesters' request for the removal of Abdu Abd Kareem as manager of the Hurghada Ports Office had been granted.

Rafiq Mohamed Rashid will be dispatched to assume the duties of the ousted Hurghada general manager.

"I saw a lot of corruption in Hurghada, especially with the boats office, where the manager never finished any situation or made a report or inspection for anyone in a normal way, like any democratic government around the world, unless he took money under the table. We even have proof that he made most of his meetings in night clubs," stated protester, Mustafa Elabd.

Elabd added, "I am happy for what happened today and I ask my democratic government to apply the fullest extent of law in punishing Abdu Abd Kareem. Now it is time to free our country from corruption. Our next action will be to address the Chamber of Water and Diving Sports to request that they review and revise the rules governing our ability to provide a good business for the divers and tourists to Egypt."

"It is unbelievable that Egyptian divers in their country are being allowed to work in the time that Russian and Polish divers are working without even permission or visas," stated maritime advocate Said Mamdouh, adding, "Cleaning up corruption in the maritime tourism industry is crucial to the recovery of Egypt's economy."

Mamdouh continued, "Throughout the past 30-years nearly every Egyptian citizen has been a victim of or witness to corruption. As successors of the Egyptian revolution, we must take our place as soldiers of justice to rebuild our country and revive its status as a respected nation with a 10,000 year history."

Demonstrators attending the protest applauded Col. Ismail's announcement giving them renewed hope that they would be able to continue forward in their business in a straight way.

EGYPT RETAINS AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS TITLE FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Taken from rooftop of the building where I live in Hurghada, Egypt. Just a small sampling of the street sounds for roughly 2+ hours after the football match ended on the evening of January 31, 2010.

LUANDA // Substitute Mohamed Nagui struck five minutes from time to secure Egypts third African Cup of Nations title in succession after a 1-0 victory over Ghana.

Nagui netted with a fine curling shot from inside the box to give Egypt a record seventh title in the continental tournament.

Ghana, who were looking for their first Nations Cup title since 1982, defended neatly throughout but were helpless when Nagui raced into the box and unleashed the winner following a swift one-two.

Egypt, unbeaten in their last 19 African Cup of Nations encounters, were pipped by Algeria for a World Cup finals place in South Africa but they have beaten four World Cup-bound teams en route to their triumph.

GAZA FREEDOM MARCH UPDATE: Egyptian Security Forces Detain Gaza Freedom Marchers in el-Arish and Shut Down Gaza Memorial in Cairo

CAIRO, EGYPT (GFM) Dec. 27, 2009 - At noon on December 27, Egyptian security forces detained a group of 30 activists in their hotel in el-Arish as they prepared to leave for Gaza, placing them under house arrest. The delegates, all part of the Gaza Freedom March of 1,300 people, were Spanish, French, British, American, and Japanese. The Egyptian security forces eventually yielded, letting most of the marchers leave the hotel, but did not permit them to leave the town. When two younger delegates, a French and Japanese woman, attempted to leave el-Arish, the Egyptian authorities stopped their taxi and unloaded their luggage.

Another group of eight people, including citizens from American, British, Spanish, Japanese and Greece, were detained at the bus station of Al Arish in the afternoon of December 27. As of 3:30 PM, they were still being held.

Simultaneously, Egyptian security police broke up a commemoration of the Israeli invasion of Gaza organized by the Gaza Freedom March at Kasr al Nil Bridge, one of the main bridges connecting Zamalek Island, in the middle of the Nile, to Cairo. As a nonviolent way of commemorating the more than 1300 Palestinians killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza that began a year ago on December 27, 2008, Gaza Freedom Marchers tied hundreds of strings with notes, poems, art and the names of those killed to the bridge.

"We're saddened that the Egyptian authorities have blocked our participants' freedom of movement and interfered with a peaceful commemoration of the dead," said Ann Wright, one of the March's organizers.

Wright added that the Gaza Freedom March participants are continuing to urge the Egyptian government to allow them to proceed to Gaza. They visited the Arab League asking for support, various foreign embassies and the Presidential Palace to give in an appeal to President Mubarak.

Gaza Freedom March Update from Cairo Egypt and Delegate, Aishah Schwartz

Preparing to head out for an interview at the offices of the Cairo's Alwafd newspaper, together with Jane Manai, a Muslimah Activist from France, and Gaza Freedom March a representative for CodePink, in support of the ongoing efforts in appealing to the Egyptian government to allow Gaza Freedom March delegates to enter Gaza. To commemorate the Israeli invasion and massacre in Gaza that resulted in the tragic loss of more than 1,400 lives and injuries to over 5,400, including 300 children over a 23-day period that began on Dec. 27, 2008, delegatess will stage a candle-light vigil and silent protest later this evening in front of the Lawyers Syndicate in downtown Cairo.
